For most questions, you have the option of assigning the Static version or Algorithmic versions of the question. Questions that include Algorithmic options are identified with an Atom icon.

Different types of questions can be mixed on a single assignment. The selection is made on the Questions screen when creating an Auto Graded Assignment.

Static vs. Algorithmic Questions - Explained

Questions that include Algorithmic options are identified on the Questions screen with an Atom icon. 


To remove those without an algorithmic option from view, check the Algorithmic Only filter.

Your selection (static vs. algorithmic) will be made when the question is selected to be Added to the assignment.


Static - Assigns same data set as in the text or related ancillary (ex: Test Bank).

Algorithmic - There are two algorithmic options. Neither will include the Static data set.

  • Same Algorithmic Version
    • Will select one of the available algorithmic data sets and assign it to All students.
    • Students data and answers will match.
    • When assigned, will appear with an Atom icon with one dark band, indicating One algorithmic data set is assigned.
  • Different Algorithmic Variations
    • Will draw assign different algorithmic versions on a student-by-student basis.
    • Data and answers will vary among students.
    • When assigned, will appear with an Atom icon, indicating varying algorithmic data sets are assigned.
