Your course's question banks may contain some manually graded questions, or you may want to create some of your own (Essay questions) to be used on auto-graded assignments....but how are those questions graded? See below for details.

If you need instruction to create Custom Questions, (See How do I create a custom question?)

How to Grade Manually Graded Questions on an Auto-Graded Assignment

When a student submits an auto-graded assignment that includes manually-graded questions, they will see the
entire assignment shown as Not yet Graded (though the auto-graded questions have been graded).

Below are two student views. In the second view, you can see Questions 1-4 have been graded; Question 5 (gray) has not.

You will need to grade the manually graded questions before the student receives a grade for the attempt.

  3. Click Make comment or override mark.Note:  The student's response may be in written form (shown above in white shaded area) or as an uploaded file, depending on the question's allowed Response Options.
If a file has been uploaded by the student, click the file link (will appear in white shaded area) to download or open in a new tab for viewing.

  4. Enter grade in Marks field at bottom of window.  Optional: Include comments to the student in the provided field.
    Save.
Note: You may see a red Changes saved message; message window will auto-close.

  5. Click Close this Window.
  6. Continue as needed.
If you notice the grade hasn't updated, don't worry...it has saved as long as you clicked Save in Step 4.
